An escape room is a STEAM lesson in disguise
Put a class through a lesson on circuits, ciphers and structural problem solving and you will lose half the room by the second slide. Lock that same class in a themed room with a countdown clock and they will teach each other all three before the hour is out.
That is the whole idea behind a school visit to Fox in a Box. Every one of our eight rooms is built from puzzles that pull on the five STEAM strands, and students work through them because they want the door to open, not because a worksheet told them to. The learning is real. It just does not announce itself.
The five STEAM strands, and where your students meet them
Here is what is actually inside the rooms, strand by strand.
Science
Mirrors that bend a beam of light, objects that float or sink, magnets that release a hidden catch, liquids that change colour, sound that carries a code. Students observe what is in front of them, form a theory and test it on the spot. The feedback is instant, which is something a classroom experiment rarely manages.
Technology
Our rooms run on electronic locks, motion sensors, light and sound triggers, projection and circuit puzzles. To reach the next stage students have to work out what a device is waiting for and give it the right input. They come out with a much better feel for how everyday technology actually behaves.
Engineering
Pulleys, structures to assemble, parts that only fit one way, objects that have to be moved or aligned before anything happens. Students try, fail, adjust and try again. That loop is design thinking, and an escape room gives them roughly twenty goes at it inside an hour.
Art
Every room is a built set. Painted walls, crafted props, hidden symbols, colour coding, a soundtrack and a story holding it all together. Students read visual clues, decode cryptic drawings and notice detail they would walk straight past anywhere else. The set design is the puzzle just as often as the lock is.
Mathematics
Number sequences, coordinates, geometry, simple algebra, ciphers, clock and time calculations and pattern spotting. Every passcode is a maths problem with a door attached. Students who will tell you flatly that they are bad at maths tend to crack four of them before the hour is up.
LEARNING THEY DO NOT NOTICE
Nobody in the room feels like they are studying. They remember all of it anyway.
What your students practise along the way
Collaboration and communication
Eight students, one room and far more clues than any one of them can hold. They have to talk, listen, delegate and trust each other, or the clock wins.
Critical thinking
A big problem broken into small clues. Students learn to take something that looks overwhelming and reduce it to pieces they can actually test.
Iterative problem solving
A wrong answer costs nothing but time. Students try ideas they would never risk in front of a full class, and being wrong stops feeling like failure.
Experiential learning
It lands because they lived it. Teachers tell us the debrief on the way back to school is the most honest discussion they get all term.
Built to take a whole class
We run modified 45 minute games for school groups, so a full class can rotate through in a single visit without anyone standing in a corridor waiting for a turn. Up to 64 students play at the same time across our eight rooms, and with staggered starts we put up to 80 students through in a single session.
Games suit students aged 10 and up. Every room is watched from our control room for the full hour, our game masters run sessions in English and Cantonese, and the 5,500 square foot venue in Kwun Tong has room to gather the whole group before you start and again for the debrief. Full details, packages and offers sit on our school trips page.
School packages and prices
Two options, both priced per student, both run by our game masters. Supervising teachers pay a reduced rate.
Offer 1 · Modified 45 minute game
HK$180
per student
HK$100 per supervisor. The shorter format that lets a full class rotate through in one visit.
Offer 2 · Standard 60 minute game
HK$218
per student
HK$100 per supervisor. The full public version of the room, unmodified.
How a school session runs
- 10 minutes: introduction to the game and getting into costume
- 45 or 60 minutes: the game itself
- 10 minutes: room photos and debrief
- 10 minutes: group question and answer session
So a 45 minute game occupies about 75 minutes end to end, and a 60 minute game about 90. The venue can also be booked exclusively for your school. Full details are in our school packages and brochure.

Questions teachers ask
Is an escape room really an educational activity?
Yes, though we would rather show you than argue about it. The puzzles are built on real principles from science, technology, engineering, art and maths, and students have to apply them under time pressure with a team. What it is not is a lesson. It works best as enrichment, a reward at the end of a unit, or a team day at the start of a school year.
Does it align with the Hong Kong STEAM curriculum?
Yes. The Education Bureau sets out the aims of STEAM education as students integrating and applying knowledge and skills across science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics, and building creativity, collaboration and problem solving while they do it. That is exactly what a session here demands. No team finishes a room by working in one subject. They have to move between observation, calculation, construction and visual decoding, under time pressure, together. Schools book us as a STEAM enrichment day and use the debrief afterwards to connect it back to classwork.
Which rooms work best for school groups?
The Bunker, Life Sentence, Wild West Saloon and Mastermind Heist are our strongest picks for students. They are rich in puzzles, light on scares and easy for a mixed ability group to get into. We will match rooms to your year level when you enquire.
How many students can come at once?
Up to 64 students can play at the same time, with eight per room across our eight rooms. Larger year groups are usually split across two sessions in the same visit, which we will plan with you.
How long should we allow for the visit?
About 75 minutes at the venue for the 45 minute game and about 90 for the 60 minute one. That covers 10 minutes of briefing and costumes, the game itself, 10 minutes of room photos and debrief, and a 10 minute group question and answer session. Tell us your coach times when you enquire and we will build the schedule around them.
Do we need to bring extra supervisors?
Every room is monitored by our team from the control room for the whole game, and a game master supports each group. Schools usually bring their normal trip ratio of staff. Tell us your numbers and we will confirm what works.
Do you come to our school?
No, and we would rather be straight about why. Our eight rooms are permanent built sets with real props, electronic locks and sound and lighting rigs wired into the building. None of that fits in a school hall, and a pop up version is a different, thinner experience. The trade is worth it: because the rooms are already built and there are eight of them, we can put up to 80 students through in a single session rather than rotating a whole year group through one portable room.
Is there a student discount?
Not a separate one, no. Our school group rate is HK$180 per student for the 45 minute game, which already sits below our public walk in price, and supervising teachers pay HK$100. If you are a student booking privately rather than through your school, you pay the standard rate.
Can a 12 year old do an escape room?
Comfortably. For school bookings we set the floor at age 10 and up, and 12 to 17 is our sweet spot for the rooms we recommend to schools. For family bookings outside school groups we welcome children from age 6, with under 10s accompanied by an adult who plays with them.
What is an escape room in school terms?
A team of students is locked in a themed room and has to solve a chain of physical puzzles to get out before the clock runs down. In curriculum terms it is a timed, collaborative, cross disciplinary problem solving task. In student terms it is the best hour of the term. Both are accurate.
How much do escape rooms cost for a school group?
HK$180 per student for the modified 45 minute game, HK$218 for the standard 60 minute game, and HK$100 per supervising teacher. Tell us your group size when you enquire and we will confirm the timetable and the total.
